MIKE BALEY

Professional Coach/Trainer
Serving the MIDWEST

BIO
Mike Bailey has been a collegiate rowing coach for 20 years. He got his start as an assistant coach with the University of Wisconsin Men’s Crew team, where he was a coxswain from ‘80-’85, helping them win back to back team national championships in ’86 & ‘87. As a Head Coach in programs at Loyola Marymount, Purdue University, Michigan State, Milwaukee School of Engineering & UC-Santa Barbara, Mike’s teams have won medals at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Dad Vail Championships, the Masters World Championships, the West Coast Championships and the Canadian Henley. His boats have won National Championships at both the ACRA and IRA regatta’s.

Mike has sent 8 individual athletes to USA Under 23 camps, with 6 going on to represent the USA at the World Championships, capturing 4 gold medals, with one silver and a 4th place finish. 2 athletes have gone on to the Senior World Championships, winning one gold medal, and one of those athletes, Amanda Elmore, stroked the USA Women’s Olympic 8 to gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Mike now focuses his energies on running Rowing Right clinics for coaches, trainers, and athletes on proper rowing technique and physiology. He offers both group and individual instruction to a wide range of athlete’s; from high school rowers looking to qualify for an NCAA scholarship to adult recreational and competitive athletes looking to improve their times. He places a big emphasis on teaching proper form to avoid injuries, and training core strength and physiology to improve times on the ergometer.

BIO
John Kaitz has been an athletic coach and professional trainer for 29 years. He has coached and trained athletes at all skill and all age levels, from eight-year- old football players to elite and Olympic athletes.  John's passion lies in his ability to improve an athlete's skill set to optimally perform quickly. He uses his knowledge of physics, biomechanics, and physiology to scientifically secure an athlete's best use of their body.

He also trains his athletes mentally, finding their best learning path, whether it's through movement, video, listening, or all three. He works to reduce mental road-block so that learning can be achieved more efficiently.

This approach to teaching has helped John's rowing and skiing athletes become National and World Champions at the collegiate and master levels, with over 30 combined National Championships, and Four World Championships. His current client list is vast and selective, including Olympic and World Champion athletes Jonny Moseley, Michelle Roark, and Shelley McGill. Recently, his latest high-profile client, Matt Brown, broke the world record in the

Talisker Atlantic Rowing Race, a race across the Atlantic. Matt is an elite National Champion rower, and a world record holder on the Concept 2 rowing machine.  Some of John's athletes have gone on to become exceptional military officers in the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps.  He salutes them every day.

Mike Bailey was the University of California at Santa Barbara Varsity Men’s rowing coach for the last three years of my collegiate rowing experience. Upon his arrival to Santa Barbara my sophomore year Mike Bailey instituted a comprehensive program overhaul of the training, equipment and approach that was an immediate improvement for the rowers. Under Mike’s direction Santa Barbara had one of the most successful runs in its history and he laid the foundation for the current programs success. As a three year member of the Varsity Lightweight 8 we were undefeated racing West Coast Lightweight Eights with results including a victory over Stanford’s JV 8 in 1991, three Western Sprints Championships, and a fourth and sixth at the IRA Championships. Without Mike Bailey we would not have won those races and I would not have continued rowing after graduation.
