About Us

WHY YOUR TEAM WILL EXCEL WITH ROWING RIGHT.

Rowing Right was founded on the idea that we could have a positive impact on high achieving athletes pursuing optimal performance. Our talents are rowing specific, and currently focus on optimal performance on the rowing ergometer, but can eventually be translated to water performance in the future. As Mike Bailey points out, "John called me one day and said, 'Mike, we can make these athletes BETTER! They're not doing it right, wasting a lot of energy, which if taught correctly, they could use that energy in the other disciplines their sport requires of them.' " John was watching the Reebok Crossfit Games at the time.

OUR STORY

At Rowing Right, we know what kind of work ethic is required to excel at high levels....we are all coaches. As coaches, we hate to see waste: wastes of energy, waste of movements, and most importantly, wastes of time. If we have the ability -and we do- to help athletes using the Concept 2 erg, to teach them perform better at using it, without any change in physical abilities, then we have succeeded in helping these athletes to work smarter, not just harder. Add in a specific training program for a desired workload, and we have helped these athletes achieve goals probably not previously considered. That kind of success -as coaches here at Rowing Right- is rewarding for us as well. It's why we coach!

Testimonials

Jeffrey C. Mork

Director of Operations – Clemson Women’s Rowing

Mike Bailey was the University of California at Santa Barbara Varsity Men’s rowing coach for the last three years of my collegiate rowing experience. Upon his arrival to Santa Barbara my sophomore year Mike Bailey instituted a comprehensive program overhaul of the training, equipment and approach that was an immediate improvement for the rowers. Under Mike’s direction Santa Barbara had one of the most successful runs in its history and he laid the foundation for the current programs success. As a three year member of the Varsity Lightweight 8 we were undefeated racing West Coast Lightweight Eights with results including a victory over Stanford’s JV 8 in 1991, three Western Sprints Championships, and a fourth and sixth at the IRA Championships. Without Mike Bailey we would not have won those races and I would not have continued rowing after graduation.

Princeton University Class of 2013

In my time at Milwaukee Rowing Club, Mike took the program from B and C final finishes, to grand finals and medals. He also worked with me personally to get me into Junior National Team Development camp, and set me on a path that would lead me to rowing on and becoming co-captain of the Princeton University Women’s Openweight team. My eight placed in the top four at the NCAA’s each year, winning one national championship and three medals over my four years. I can honestly say that I wouldn't be where I am today without Coach Bailey. He encouraged me, inspired me and gave me confidence in my abilities. I had no idea if I wanted to row in college or if I even could. He saw my potential and helped me exceed my own expectations in the sport. He helped me develop in rowing technique, strength and mental toughness, helping me to dream big about where rowing could take me. He also changed the overall momentum of our team, creating a more competitive environment that brought everyone to a new level. I am thankful to have been coached by Mike Bailey, and feel that any program would greatly benefit from his coaching.

Team USA - Men’s Coxed 4 at the 2013 U23 World Championships.

I was introduced to Rowing by Mike Bailey. He coached me for 2 years at Michigan State University. During his time as Head Coach, he was able to develop a core group of high performing athletes. This allowed the entire team to grow around that structure. New members would see the success, and want to be a part of it. They would be willing to invest time and effort into what they saw as a winning program. All athletes were committed to the same goal of developing the team into the productive program which they wanted to be a part of. I have had the fortune to be coached by many capable and successful people. None have had as great an impact on a program, or on me personally, as Mike Bailey did.

I was a member of the UC Santa Barbara Heavyweight crew from 1987-1992 and was in the Open 4+ that narrowly defeated Wisconsin to win the IRA championship in 1990. Coach Bailey arrived in 1989 and had an immediate impact, and enabled our small club program to compete at previously unattainable levels. Even though it has been nearly 25 years since my graduation from UCSB, I still remember the drive and enthusiasm Coach Bailey instilled into us as young men.
